DESCRIPTION: APW - Waltham, Lugrin's patent double-dial chronograph, Amer.n Watch Co, Model 1874, 14J, 14S, heavy 18K gold original A.W.Co. HC with spring-loaded front and rear, selection of opening front or rear controlled by tilting bow away from desired side, glazed mvt observation cover, front with conversion style white enamel SS timekeeping dial with seconds-register at 9 which allows this OF model mvt to orient properly in a HC with pendant at 3, rear with white enamel chronograph chapter ring divided in 1/5-second increments, SW-LS, gilt mvt, s#1090671. Gross weight of assembled watch 90.3 dwt (140.5 g). A very nice original example of this scarce early Waltham chronograph type.
CONDITION: Mvt: Running, good chronograph function, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall in visible portion, mild haze to portions of gilt surfaces and few micro-fine scratches; front timekeeping dial with some hls between 6 and right side of seconds-register and with a tiny associated edge nick near 6, two hls between seconds-register and edge between 8:30 and 9; rear chronograph ring with light hls in several areas, minuscule nicks around left side affixing screw, small edge flake outside 26 minutes, overall far superior to the vast majority of these dials we encounter which have significant damage; excellent hands; case shows very light wear, scattered dings to rear, few mild dings to front which are mostly evident to inner surface of lid, engine turning detail with reduction at shoulders, front lift spring only contacting lid through the initial half of its opening motion so lid must be manually lifted through the remainder of its opening range; tight bow, crown shows light wear with small ridge break; good glass crystal.
